Health of Arctic Char near Kugluktuk, Nunavut
The project lead has been fishing for char for as long as he can remember. When he was younger, the char were very abundant and healthy. Now, many of them are sick and the meat sometimes smells bad. Some don’t have any scars or wounds and they look good, but the meat smells bad when you filet them. Some of them have crooked spines. Other fish have cysts or lumps with pus. The goal of the project is to measure the quality of fish in lakes and rivers that are fished by Kugluktummiut and find out if the water quality, contaminants, or snagging is making them sick. The results will be used by the Kugluktuk HTO and the community to help keep the local Arctic Char healthy.
